Since time began, communication has been the cornerstone of civilization.
But although this was a way of alerting others to danger for ancient man, in the modern world communication is much more complex and prone to interpretation. Every day, we communicate with others in many ways. Some are subtle and some less so but, despite this, we often give little thought to how effective our communications actually are.
What Makes A Good Communicator?
A good communicator is able to convey information to others in a way which is easy to understand and to process. A great communicator is someone who is able to quickly engage his or her audience quickly and produce a rapport from which the listener will feel invested in what they’re being told.
The Four Types Of Communicator
It’s commonly believed that there are four distinct types of communicator and these are:
Directors
Within any group or organization, it's important to have a person (or persons) able to take charge and to lead and inspire others. These people, known as directors, will often be charismatic with a strong sense of responsibility and will be confident in delegating responsibilities to those around them.
Socializers
Empathetic, engaging and outgoing, socializers tend to have a positive outlook and are often gifted with the power of persuasion. The socializer is usually open minded and open to change and is skilled at both listening to others and bringing others around to their point of view.
Thinkers
This type of communicator is one that you’ll always want on your squad. Organized, reliable and great at problem solving, the thinker will usually seek to find a logical and analytical solution to any problem and is able to keep a cool head under pressure. Because the thinker tends to work in terms of evidence rather than emotion, they will usually be able to find the shortest path to getting the job done.
Supporters
As the name suggests, the supporter is all about other people and, as such, will usually display an extraordinary level of patience, empathy and optimism. Supporters tend to be invaluable when it comes to conflict resolution and are usually a pleasure to work with as well as being skilled at achieving a more balanced and sustainable outcome.
Most of us will naturally fall into one of these categories of communicator. Be in no doubt: none of which are “better” than any other, so don’t strive to be a “director because you think that’s best! But being able to identify what kind of communicator we are, can help us to know how to play to our strengths and develop our communication skills in the right way.
Talking The Talk
In 2024, 73% of job adverts
stated good communication skills as a requirement, so how do yours stack up? We’ve always found that communication skills tests are a great way of identifying your strengths and weaknesses and therefore highlighting areas for improvement.
These tests will usually only take a few minutes of your time and can also be really insightful as they focus on parts of your personality that you may not have given much thought to before.
Why Take A Communications Skills Test ?
Often, we fall into a communication style out of habit and without even being aware of it. Because of this, many people go through life blissfully unaware of the fact that gaps in their communications skills may be holding them back professionally, socially ... or both.
Years ago, we developed our
communication skills test and this has helped thousands of people to identify some of these gaps and provide them with a roadmap of the areas that need improvement.
“I Have Poor Communication Because I’m Shy”
There’s a common misconception that shy or introverted people don’t have the necessary tools to communicate effectively. Especially if it’s speaking in public.
In fact, the opposite is often the case, and that’s because impactful speaking goes hand in hand with research and preparation – which is something that introverts tend to excel at. Proof of this is the fact that some of the world’s most influential speakers are / were shy or introverted, including Barack Obama, Albert Einstein and Eleanor Roosevelt.
