When hiring new staff it’s natural to want them to be able to hit the ground running - particularly during busy times. Without proper training, however, your business is more likely to hit a brick wall. Too many employers these days make the mistake of believing that on-the-job learning is the most effective kind.

So in this article we’re sharing six reasons why saying “we don’t have time for training” is a bad idea … a very bad idea!

A lack of training means a lack of ability to perform

When A Lack Of Training Is A Bad Call

When onboarding new staff, training is a vital part of the process. Not only does proper training teach the new recruit how to do the job, it also educates them in the ethos and culture of the company. An example of this would be the telecoms industry in which fast and efficient customer support is absolutely essential. Here, training is essential to ensure that customer queries are handled by knowledgeable and effective personnel.

Most of us have had the misfortune of finding ourselves on the phone with some poor soul who clearly has no idea how to help. While some of us may just seethe silently, others will be more vocal and will even turn to social media to vent their frustration. Because of this, poor or inadequate customer support can quickly lead to negative online feedback and lost custom.

1. Cracking The Consistency Code

As well as making training part of the onboarding process, you should also be regularly re-training existing employees. Comprehensive staff training introduces consistency across your brand thereby eliminating discrepancies and gaps which can have a negative impact on the customer experience. For example; when all of your support staff have received the same training on policies and best practices, every customer will receive the same high standard of assistance.

2. Make No Mistake About It

It’s a simple fact that untrained employees make more mistakes - and these errors are likely to cost your company more in time and money than initial training will. Not only do mistakes cost your business financially, they can also damage your reputation - which is something that most companies can ill afford in a highly competitive market (and something that your competitors will be happy to take advantage of).

3. Production And Performance Without The Drama

At the end of the day, you’re hiring staff to help you produce goods or services to a fast, effective and high quality standard. This can only happen when your entire team is armed with the skills and knowledge needed to get the job done.

Everyone in your team needs the skills to do their jobs

Forget “we don’t have time for training” - the reality is that you really don’t have time to do without it! Poor or no training creates gaps in skills and performance which translate to slowed productivity and ineffective performance.

4. Keeping Staff Onboard

When a new employee is simply left to ‘get on with it’, this can quickly lead to stress and frustration. Trying to do a job without knowing what to do or whether you’re doing it right makes employees feel demoralised and disengaged. This, in turn, creates high levels of staff turnover - meaning more time and money spent on recruitment for your company. Great training means that you get to hold onto your talent - and your money - for longer.

5. Becoming Risk Averse When It Comes To Compliance

These days there are tons of guidelines and regulations that a business has to adhere to in order to stay credible and, more importantly, within the law. Compliance breaches can result in hefty fines and reputational damage to your company - quickly undoing all of your hard work. Training your staff on compliance matters can help to prevent inadvertent breaches and reduce ambiguity within the workplace.

And with or without compliance, technical subjects like 5G training courses are absolutely vital because without a good knowledge of the skills required, company staff will never be able to perform at the level needed.

Compliance training provides security

6. Creating A Company Culture To Be Proud Of

Picture the scene - you have a team of 10 staff; none of whom have received formal training either on the job or on workplace culture. You now have 10 people who all, potentially, have their own ways of doing things and think that their way is the only way. Needless to say, this is going to make for an unpleasant working atmosphere and a complete lack of teamwork which, in turn, leads to a lack of productivity.

Training allows you to put rules and guidelines in place for all employees to follow - which means that everyone is on the same page. This in turn makes for a more harmonious and more effective team with less errors and more consistency.

Training is something you cannot do without!

Staff Training Drives Platforms For Productivity

Employee training is so much more than just teaching people to perform tasks. It’s about creating teams that work together toward a common goal through a series of tried and tested actions. A team without training is kind of like a football team without the club strip - confusing, chaotic and ultimately ineffective.

An investment in employee training is an investment in the future of your company as your training policies form the backbone of your brand. Because of this, although training may involve an outlay or time and money, it will pay for itself in terms of performance, productivity and a reputation for a great company culture.

And on a final note, your training absolutely doesn’t have to cost you a fortune. These days, online and outsourced options are available to help you to provide expert training without the hefty price tag.
