Making a major purchase can be exciting but it can also be stressful if you don't know what you're looking at. For many people, conducting product research online only increases confusion rather than adding clarity - and this is where expert reviews come in.

Expert reviews are your key to clarity with your purchases

Know Your Reviewers

We all know that reading evaluations of a product is vital for getting an idea of its quality and reliability - but not all reviews are created equal. In many cases, these accounts are either written by ordinary consumers or, worse, written or purchased by employees of the product's brand.

To help you to understand reviews better, some variations are:

Customer reviews - Reviews written by ordinary customers who have bought a product and used it normally - often for just a short time
Affiliate reviews - This type of review is written by people who are being paid to ‘plug' a product by writing a positive review; regardless of whether or not they have actually used it
Employee reviews - These are written by owners or employees of a company in a bid to add credibility to their product
Expert reviews - These reviews are produced by people who have expert knowledge of a particular type of product. Expert reviews will offer information based on robust testing, in-depth analysis and highly informed recommendations

Expert opinions can make the difference between a smart purchase and an expensive mistake.

What Makes Expert Reviews So Valuable?

Expert reviews offer a structured approach that ensures that consumers get an objective and comprehensive assessment of the product rather than just a surface-level overview. For example, instead of relying on promotional claims from a brand, we've looked at his Behind the Markets subscription review which examines the experience of Jovine as a Wall Street professional, the investment strategies he promotes, and the actual real-life value of his stock recommendations.

The simple fact is that brands want you to buy their products and they'll try to achieve this through glossy advertising showing happy people enjoying the product as well as seemingly glowing reports from satisfied customers. These may not always be exactly what they seem.

Expert assessments, on the other hand, are produced by people who have a significant amount of product or industry knowledge; making them a thought leader in a specific niche. Brands will automatically - and understandably - highlight their strengths and benefits in their advertising while expert reviewers will:

● Identify small but vital differences that the average consumer may overlook
● Compare products in a fair and clinical manner including features and build quality
● Test multiple products within the same conditions and parameters for a consistent approach

These things can be incredibly important in allowing consumers to make an educated decision - particularly when making a big bucks purchase where even the small differences can have a big impact on long-term satisfaction.

What To Look Out For

Expert reviews can usually be found for every type of purchase, however big or small and can really help to guide your purchase decisions.

All types of purchase will have reviews published

This is of course vital when buying an item which is expensive, has complex features or involves a long-term commitment.  In this section, we're looking at some of the most common products that require expert analysis:

Consumer technology and electronics

These days, many of us rely on our tech and, most folk own and buy items such as Smartphones, laptops, tablets and smart home devices. In many cases, the specifications listed in adverts will be pretty much even-Stevens which means that we'll often simply make a decision based on price - which can be a mistake. Expert reviews are really helpful in highlighting crucial differences in performance, software optimization and long-term reliability and durability. These reviewers conduct benchmark tests on competing models and assess real-world usability to arm you with all the facts before making your important purchase.

Health & wellness products

When it comes to products that we're putting inside our bodies or on our skin, it's essential to have all the facts. Vitamins and supplements can vary widely in terms of ingredients, doses and effectiveness and these differences can impact our health. Similarly, devices designed to monitor health, such as fitness trackers, may differ in accuracy which can, in some instances, cause harm. Expert reviews are a great way of assessing the suitability of supplements and for equipment that has been expertly tested and held up to medical grade standards.

Automotive products

Whether you're buying a vehicle for work or for family days out, this is an expensive purchase and one in which safety and reliability are of paramount importance.

Automotive products are expensive and justify research before you buy

While you'll no doubt road test a vehicle before buying it, this won't help you to assess every aspect of its performance. Expert reviews are vital here as these professional reviewers will assess the following for you in real-world conditions:

● Performance
● Safety features including crash test data
● Reliability
● Fuel efficiency
● Handling
● Maintenance costs
● Industry safety ratings

For the average consumer, these reviews give peace of mind when making one of the most expensive purchases of their lives.

Home appliances and smart home devices

At some point in our lives, most of us will be in the market for a new fridge, washing machine or a Smart home device such as a robot vacuum, smart thermostat, security equipment or a Smart speaker. As you'll no doubt be aware, the options when buying these things seem endless and it can be really difficult to choose when your only interest is, for example, keeping your food cool. An expert reviewer, on the other hand, is passionate about his or her subject and will professionally test products to determine safety, reliability, longevity and integration with other devices.

Travel & hospitality

If you've ever gone on holiday only to find that your hotel bears no resemblance to the shiny pictures on the operator's website, you'll know how frustrating this can be. Travel operators can sometimes ‘bend the truth' a little when it comes to the quality of their product or the true price of a holiday. While ordinary travel reviews can be helpful here, these will generally be written by people who have only experienced a snapshot of a destination during a short visit. Expert reviewers, however, are experienced in digging deeper into hotel and travel deals in order to offer information on:

● Airline comfort and reliability
● Customer support
● Hidden fees
● Safety of a destination
● Comparisons of destinations
● Cost-effectiveness
● Local experiences

Many of us are only able to take one holiday a year - and so taking advantage of expert reviews is a great way of making sure we make the most of our time out.

Luxury goods & high-end fashion

If you're mad about motorcycles or dotty about designer bags, you'll know that these things don't come cheap. It can, therefore, be incredibly disappointing when your investment purchase doesn't cut the mustard. It's important to bear in mind the fact that, just because something is expensive, this doesn't necessarily mean that it's high quality.

Designer goods are expensive but this doesn't mean they're good!

Also, some websites will sell high-end brand products at a cheaper price due to an imperfection or fault. A professional reviewer is able to look past a brand name and to give an impartial assessment of price, durability and brand reputation to help you spend your money more wisely.

How to Identify Genuine Expert Reviews

With so much information available, distinguishing between genuine expert reviews and biased or misleading content is crucial. Reviews are often influenced by factors such as sponsorships, affiliate marketing deals and simple personal bias - and this won't always be transparent. It is, therefore, essential to find reliable sources before making a significant purchase.

Where to find expert reviews

If you have access to the internet, there are some great sources for expert reviews and these are:

Blog sites - Many expert reviewers have their own sites where they share blog posts on product reviews
Industry-specific websites - Sites such as “Which” are created specifically to offer unbiased product reviews
Research-based publications - There are lots of magazines and ezines available that offer in-depth analysis of various products
Video platforms - These are particularly useful as they allow you to actually watch the testing process of a product for added peace of mind

Some retail websites offer reviews of their products on-site and, although this can be helpful, it's important to remember that they are likely to be biased.

How To Spot The Fakes

We've explained the importance of genuine expert reviews - but how can you tell if a review is genuine or a fake? In this section, we'll share some tips on identifying the real thing:

Transparent testing methods

If a reviewer is professional, he or she will be only too happy to either explain how they tested a product or service - or provide a video to show you. If a review just scratches the surface without any real depth or detail, there's a good chance that the reviewer is not a professional.

Closely check reviews for in-dept testing

Check the review for performance benchmarks, durability tests and industry-standard comparisons - and if it doesn't have these, move on.

Independent opinions

Earlier in this article, we mentioned affiliate reviews and these will come across as having a definite positive slant toward the product in question or bias toward a particular product during a comparison. A professional review will always be impartial and will outline the pros and cons of each product being analyzed for a balanced perspective.

Checking out the credentials

So, this guy or gal claims to be an expert - do we just take their word for it? Nope. Before trusting a reviewer's opinion, first check out their qualifications and experience to make sure that it is genuine and relevant to the field or industry of the product.

Fielding the affiliates

Yep, them again. Lots of individuals such as vloggers and business websites earn money by promoting associated products. We're not saying that these are completely without value but it should go without saying that somebody who is being paid by a brand has an incentive to show the brand's product in the best positive light. Always compare affiliate reviews against other sources for a more objective overview of a product.

Consistency is key

If reviews across different platforms vary widely, this can be a red flag. Why? It's unlikely (although not impossible) that different users will have massively conflicting opinions about the same product or service. If this happens, try to find the most reliable source - for example; the blogger with the most followers or qualifications - for the most trustworthy view.

Finding fair feedback

Even expert reviewers are held to account by their users and so it's a good idea to compare the expert's opinion with that of their followers. If these generally align, then great. If not, this may indicate sponsorship or affiliation - in which case, it's wise to look at further expert reviews. Arming yourself with a combination of expert and lay person opinions is a great way of obtaining a clear and balanced picture.

Conclusion

When considering a major purchase, most of us simply don't have the time to carry out exhaustive research and testing and so expert reviews are a time-saving godsend as well as giving us the benefit of expertise.

As advertising methods become more sophisticated, it's easy to get sucked in and, often, before we know it, we're in a world of buyer's regret. For those expensive or important purchases, having the benefit of objective analysis, industry knowledge and detailed comparisons can help us to get it right the first time. As we've highlighted in this article, knowing how to identify credible witnesses is half the battle - and if they've done their job well, don't forget your feedback as this will help other buyers.
